Arthroscopic procedures are minimally invasive types of surgeries that can be performed for injured joints. In an arthroscopic procedure, small incisions are made around a joint and an endoscope (small instrument with a camera attached) is inserted to give the doctor a better view of what is going on inside. This small camera allows transmits the image to a screen whereby a doctor can view the injury and take any necessary actions to heal it.
Advantages of an Arthroscopic Surgery
Usually, for a surgeon to perform a procedure, they have to cut into the tissue to open it up for viewing. During an Arthroscopic surgery, only 2-3 small incisions are made, allowing the doctor to operate without fully opening up the joint. This reduces the recovery time as there is less trauma to the tissue and improves the success rate as there is less risk of infection.
When is an Arthroscopy Necessary
Arthroscopies are necessary when there are inflammations or injuries to the joint. Some of the following procedures could be done arthroscopically.
- Rotator Cuff Repair
- Relieving Carpel Tunnel
- Knee Meniscal Tears
- ACL Repairs
- Loose Bodies such as Bone and Cartilage in the Body
Arthritis is also usually diagnosed through arthroscopic surgery, and its symptoms such as inflammation of the joint’s linings, can be relieved with this procedure.
Recovery
Due to the nature of this procedure, an Arthroscopy carries less recovery time. Usually the incisions will heal within a couple of days and most of the time the dressings are removed the very next day. While the pain is small, it does take a couple of weeks for the joint to heal completely, however, most patients can get back to work in a couple of days.
