DeQuervain’s Tendonitis Treatment in Fort Lauderdale, FL
DeQuervain’s Tendonitis, also known as DeQuervain’s Tenosynovitis, is a painful condition that affects the tendons on the thumb side of the wrist. Any activity that relies on repetitive hand or wrist movements can make this condition worse.
DeQuervain’s Tendonitis Symptoms
Symptoms of this condition vary for each individual. Below are the common symptoms of de Quervain tendonitis:
- Pain near the base of the thumb
- Swelling near the base of the thumb
- Difficulty moving the thumb and wrist when doing something that involves grasping or pinching
- A “sticking” or “stop-and-go” sensation in the thumb when trying to move it
DeQuervain’s Tenosynovitis Causes
Chronic overuse, such as repeating a particular motion every day, may irritate the tendons associated with the thumb side of the wrist. Some other causes of this condition include:
- Inflammatory arthritis
- Direct injury to the wrist or tendons, which may cause scar tissue that restricts movement of the tendons
- Fluid retention, such as from changes in hormones during pregnancy
DeQuervain’s Tenosynovitis Treatment
The treatment for this condition is aimed at reducing inflammation, preserving movement in the thumb, and preventing it from recurring. Below are some common treatment plans for this condition:
- Medications – Over-the-counter medications are used to help reduce pain and swelling; sometimes corticosteroids are recommended to reduce swelling as well
- Therapies – Working with a physical therapist can assist you with exercises and stretches to help strengthen the area and increase your range of motion
- Surgery – This may be recommended for more serious cases
