Herniated Disc
Herniated Disc Treatment in Fort Lauderdale, FL
Discs are located in your back and are situated between the individual vertebra that comprises your spine. The discs act as cushions, or padding so that your vertebrae aren’t touching each other and essentially act as shock absorbers, which are composed of a tough outer layer surrounding an inner nucleus.
A herniated disc occurs when the inner nucleus is pushed out through the outer layer and into the spinal column. When a disc herniates, it presses against the spinal nerves, which can cause excruciating pain. A herniated disc can occur anywhere in the spinal column but are most common in the neck and lower back.
Herniated Disc Causes
A disc herniation is most often caused by gradual, aging-related wear and tear called degeneration. As people age, the discs become less flexible, allowing them to be more prone to tearing or rupturing; many times, the cause of the injury is unknown.
Herniated Disc Exercises
Many different exercises can help with pain and swelling. For exercises to be effective, it is important to perform these exercises 3 to 5 times a week for a few weeks. Below are five key exercises you can follow:
- Standing Lumbar Extension – Helps relieve the pressure on the discs in your back
- Standing Row with Resistance Band – Helps lessen pain
- Prone on Elbows – Helps realign the discs
- Cobra Pose – This is an advancement from Prone on Elbows to help realign discs
Sciatic Nerve Floss – Helps with pain and helps improve motion
